Transylvania 1651-NB thaler Dav-4751
This specimen was lot 42821 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $2,928. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. Taler, 1651-NB. Baia Mare (Nagybanya) Mint. Georg II Rakoczi. NGC EF Details--Tooled. Misattributed as Dav-4750 by NGC where the obverse legend is GEORGIVS not GEOR:RAKO. Despite tooling, this example has decent surfaces and only has modest wear. An ever demanded type that will doubtlessly see much attention. From the Heisner Collection from Down Under." This type was struck 1651-56. Other thalers of 1651 include Dav-4746 and Dav-4750, which vary in the obverse legend. While Georg II Rakoczi (1648-60) brought Transylvania to the peak of her power, succession disputes after his death allowed the Hapsburgs to intervene.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28-29 g, silver, 42-44 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Dav-4751; KM-286.
