The first specimen was lot 7434 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $5,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRANSYLVANIA. Ducat, 1646-AI. Alba Lucia Mint. Georg Rakoczi (1630-48). Armored bust right, legend around./Eagle right holding sword atop castles, dividing A-I, legend around. EXTREMELY FINE."

The second specimen was lot 4167 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description[2] noted, "Transylvania. Ducat, 1646. Weissenburg mint. Georg I Rakoczi, 1630-1648. Armored half length bust with fur cap right and scepter over right shoulder. Leg: GEORG.RAKO.D.G.PRI.TRA. Reverse: Eagle over seven castles, A-I at sides. Leg: PA.RE.HV.DO.ET.SIC.CO.1646*. Lovely original mint luster. NGC graded MS-61. George Rakoczi I was essentially the last successful ruler of Transylvania. After his death in 1648, the state went quickly downhill. The golden age was over." The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. Like many Transylvanian ducats, this type was struck the one year only.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW; the second specimen was 3.46 grams. 21.9 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-384; KM 261; Hess-863; Resch-45.
