Sincona sale 51, lot 3843

This specimen was lot 3843 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,051 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Siebenburgen, Georg Rakoczi II. 1648-1660. Taler 1649 NB, Nagybanya. Dav-4746. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Rand etwas bearbeitet. (principality of Transylvania, George Rakoczy II, 1648-60, thaler of 1649, Nagybánya mint. Very rare, Very fine, Edge slightly tooled.)"

Like most coins of Transylvania, this type (struck 1649 along with Dav-4742, -4742A, -4743, -4744, -4744A and -4745) is rare and expensive. As Transylvania was never part of the Holy Roman Empire and was not at this point controlled by the Hapsburgs, we have not included it in the "silver thalers of Germany."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.01 g.

Catalog reference: Resch 8. Lajos 559 d, Dav-4746; KM-A282.
