Transylvania 1590 thaler Dav-8802
This specimen was lot 1806 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,983 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · UNGARN, SIEBENBÜRGEN, FÜRSTEN Sigismund Bathory, 1581-1602. Reichstaler 1590. Hübsche Patina, leichte Broschierspuren, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Hungary principality of Transylvania, Sigismund Bathory, 1581-1602, thaler of 1590. Handsome patina, removed from jewelry, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. This type was struck 1589-92.
