Transylvania 1580 thaler Dav-8797
This specimen was lot 1006 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 10,000 CHF (about US$15,240 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"UNGARN Siebenbürgen, Christoph Bathori, 1576-1581. Nottaler 1580, Hermannstadt. Ausgegeben während der türkischen Belagerung. Sehr selten. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Hungary, principality of Transylvania, Christoph Bathori, 1576-81, emergency thaler of 1580, Hermannstadt mint, struck during a Turkish siege. Very rare. NGC AU55, Extraordinary condition, Finest certified by NGC.)"
Christoph Bathori was never crowned prince of Transylvania but was appointed its voivode (governor) 1576-81. This is the plate coin in Numista.
