Transylvania 1582 ducat Fr-295
This specimen was lot 33264 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "Transylvania. Sigismund Bathory gold Ducat 1582 MS61 NGC, Nagyszeben (Hermannstadt/Sibiu) mint, Fr-63. An appealing Madonna type, fully lustrous and quite lacking in the surface marks one might associate with the assigned grade, with only touches of strike weaknesses in areas, as are to be expected for this crude hammered issue." Friedberg lists this type for 1581-98 and notes it as fairly common. The Hermannstadt mintmark was two crossed swords, crown above. The auctioneers incorrectly cited this as Fr-63, which was struck in the name of Rudolf II.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-295.
