SB224-75794r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75794 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "TIMOR. 50 Avos, 1948. Lisbon Mint. PCGS MS-65. An appealing Gem example, delivering rich luster and soft tone at the peripheries. A visually impressive example for the specialists in the series." This type was struck 1945, 1948 and 1951; only the 1945 is scarce. Issues for that colony did not commence until 1945, after the Japanese surrender, and continued until Portuguese withdrawal in 1975. Soon after, Indonesian forces occupied and devastated the island until Australian pressure caused them to withdraw as well, in 1999. The area preserves a fragile independence as the Republic of Timor-Leste.

Recorded mintage: 500,000.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.650 fine silver, 20.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-7.
