This specimen was lot 2599 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 1,250 CHF (about US$1,538 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Sammlung Dr. Charles Froidevaux Tessin 4 Franken 1814, Münzstätte Luzern (mit Stern). Spitzes Kantonswappen in Lorbeerkranz. Rv. Stehender Krieger mit Hellebarde und Schild, unten im Abschnitt Wertangabe und Münzzeichen. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, Ticino, four franchi of 1814, Luzerne mint, with star. Obverse: pointed shield in laurel wreath. Reverse: standing warrior with halberd and shield, denomination below. Extremely fine.)"

This is the only thaler struck for Ticino between the departure of the French (1815) and confederation (1848). It is variously catalogued as a thaler, a four franken and a forty batzen, all much the same thing. This type comes with and without the star below "4 FRANCHI."

Recorded mintage: 7,921.

Specification: silver; this specimen is 29,42 g.
