Künker sale 293, lot 750

This specimen was lot 750 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €180 (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHER ORDEN, DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM Maximilian II. Franz von Österreich, 1780-1801. 10 Konv.-Kreuzer 1801, Würzburg, auf seinen Tod. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, fast Stempelglanz. (Teutonic Order in Mergentheim, Maximilian II Francis of Austria, 1780-1801, ten convention kreuzer of 1801, Wurzburg mint, on the death of the Grandmaster. Proof example, beautiful toning, minor edge defect, about uncirculated.)"

In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. Accordingly, the coinage is scanty and rare. This is the last ten kreuzer issued before its abolition in 1809. It was accompanied by a quarter thaler (KM 157).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Prokisch 307, KM 156.
