Künker sale 293, lot 749

This specimen was lot 749 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €750 (about US$1,011 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHER ORDEN, DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM Maximilian II. Franz von Österreich, 1780-1801. 1/4 Konv.-Taler 1801, Würzburg, auf seinen Tod. Prachtexemplar. Feine Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Teutonic Order in Mergentheim, Maximilian II Francis of Austria, 1780-1801, quarter convention thaler of 1801, Wurzburg mint, on the death of the Grandmaster. Proof example, fine patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. Accordingly, the coinage is scanty and rare. This is the last quarter thaler issued before its abolition in 1809. It was accompanied by a ten kreuzer (KM 156).

Recorded mintage: 300.

Specification: 7.015 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Prokisch 306 A/b, KM 157.
