Aureo sale 232, lot 2862

This specimen was lot 2862 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 140 euros (about US$231 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SUIZA. 1916. B (Berna). 10 francos. AU. EBC+. (Switzerland, ten francs of 1916, Berne mint, gold, choice extremely fine.)"

This Swiss ten francs conforms to the standard of the Latin Monetary Union, where twenty francs = 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold. Switzerland continued to use this standard even after France, its originator, abandoned it after World War One. This type was struck 1911-16 and 1922; only the 1922 is common.

Recorded mintage: 130,000.
