Sincona sale 51, lot 4258

This specimen was lot 4258 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$9,047 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"2 Franken 1879 B, Bern. NGC MS64+. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Swiss confederation, two francs of 1879, Bern mint. Magnificent condition.)"

This type was struck at the Bern mint starting in 1874 and the design is still in use today tho the coin is now nickel. This specimen is struck to the standard of the French two francs of 1866-1920. Many of the dates from the twentieth century are very common but this one is expensive in nice condition. Prior to confederation in 1850, each Swiss canton issued its own coins.

Recorded mintage: 517,750 + specimens.

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver.
