Künker sale 293, lot 2251

This specimen was lot 2251 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €300 (about US$404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ, EIDGENOSSENSCHAFT, Ku.-1 Rappen 1853, B, Bern. Variante mit breitem Schweizerkreuz auf der Vorderseite. R Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Swiss Confederation, copper rappen of 1853, Bern mint, variety with large cross on obverse. Scarce, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was first issued in 1850. This date has a high catalog value, especially compared to twentieth century dates which can be had for a few dollars in any grade. The thin cross variety obtains a large premium. We are not familiar enough with the market to know if the catalog price is realistic.

Recorded mintage: 2,008,000.

Specification: bronze, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 3.1, Divo 20.
