Sweden 1869-ST riksdaler specie Dav-356
This specimen was lot 36754 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carl XV Adolf 4 Riksdaler 1869-ST MS64 NGC. Overlying pastel tone adds characters to the surfaces with velvety underlying luster remaining apparent. An exemplary example of the type, and currently the single finest graded example of this date at NGC. From The Law Collection." Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. In 1855, the skilling was dropped and 100 öre = 4 riksdaler riksmynt = 1 riksdaler specie (the riksdaler specie remained unchanged). This type of 1861-71 is somewhat common. In 1873, the riksdaler specie was dropped and 100 öre = 1 krona (the krona, at 7.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, was slightly smaller than the old riksdaler riksmynt).
Recorded mintage: 314,000.
Specification: 34.00 g, 0.750 fine silver.
