Sweden 1859-ST 25 ore
This specimen was lot 11165 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €219.60 (about US$253). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 25 Öre, 1859/8-LA/ST. Stockholm Mint. Oskar I. NGC MS-64. Attractive near-gem example of this overdate variety. The alignment of the reverse is rotated 30 degrees. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." In 1855, the skilling was dropped and 400 öre = 4 riksdaler riksmynt = 1 riksdaler species (the riksdaler species remained unchanged). This type of 1855-59 is somewhat common. Overdates 1859/7 and 1859/8 (shown here) exist and obtain a slight premium. In 1873, the riksdaler species was dropped and 100 öre = 1 krona (the krona, at 7.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, was slightly smaller than the old riksdaler riksmynt).
Recorded mintage: 1,183,124 for 1858-59.
Specification: 2.13 g, 0.750 fine silver, 17.4 mm diameter, this specimen 1.94 g.
