Sweden 1859-ST ducat Fr-90a
This specimen was lot 11164 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €1,037 (about US$1,196). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Ducat, 1859-ST. Stockholm Mint. Oskar I. NGC Unc Details--Obverse Cleaned. Last year of this type. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." In 1855, the skilling was dropped and 400 öre = 4 riksdaler riksmynt = 1 riksdaler species (the riksdaler species remained unchanged). This type of 1845-59 is somewhat common. Numista states one ducat was 16/3 riksdaler banco; i.e. 3 ducats = 4 riksdalers specie. We suspect but can't prove that the ducat actually floated in value against the silver riksdaler specie. In 1873, the riksdaler species was dropped and 100 öre = 1 krona (the krona, at 7.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, was slightly smaller than the old riksdaler riksmynt).
Recorded mintage: 30,705.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.976 fine gold, 19.2 mm diameter, .109 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,49 g.
