Sweden 1844-AG riksdaler specie Dav-353
This specimen was lot 1065 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $4,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Oscar I. 1844-1859. AR Riksdaler. Stockholm mint. Alexander Grandinson, engraver. Dated 1844 AG. Large head variety. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Choice brilliant uncirculated with a faint hint of toning. Only one of this type ever graded. A two year only type and extremely rare. A coin type that almost never appears on the market at this quality. Purchased from B. Ahlström, December 1980." This type was struck 1844-45 and is scarce. The present dynasty is descended from Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals who defected to Sweden. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. In 1830, 32 skilling banco = one riksdaler riksgald and 4 riksdaler riksgalds = one riksdaler species (the riksdaler species became 34 g, 0.750 fine silver).
