Sincona sale 38, lot 1930

This specimen was lot 1930 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$3,598 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Karl XIV. Johann, 1818-1844 Dukat 1822. Stockholm. Vorzüglich-FDC. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XIV John, 1818-44, ducat of 1822, Stockholm mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

Ducats of various types were issued in Sweden throughout the nineteenth century until 1868. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type is listed for 1818-29 and is rare. Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today.

Recorded mintage: 5,222, a slightly scarce date of a rare type.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.45 g.

Catalog reference: Ahlström 17a. Schl. 34. Fr-84, KM 594.
