Sweden SB818-21559r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21559 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Riksdaler, 1816-OL. Stockholm Mint. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Type II. Attractive iridescent toning is seen throughout with no visible highpoint friction and a few minor unobtrusive adjustment marks on the obverse. Seldom appearing in certified quality, we note the last appearance of this date in MS-63 grade occurred in 2010 when Kunker offered an example that realized a hammer of 2,000 Euros (approximately $2,700 at the time). From the Keystone Collection. Purchased from World-Wide Coins of California, April 1994." This type is listed for 1814-18 and is somewhat scarce. The present dynasty is descended from Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals who defected to Sweden. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period.

Recorded mintage: 12,000.

Specification: 29.36 g, 0.878 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 588; Davenport 348; AAH-14; Sieg-11.
