Sincona sale 38, lot 1929

This specimen was lot 1929 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$5,397 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN, Gustav IV. Adolph, 1792-1809 Dukat 1808. Stockholm. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of Sweden, Gustavus IV Adolph, 1792-1809, ducat of 1808, Stockholm mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1799-1809 and is scarce as are most Swedish ducats. Gustav IV was deposed by military coup in 1809 when the officer corps became annoyed with his attempts to provoke a war with Russia to recover Finland.

Recorded mintage: 8,700.
