Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1261
SB924-1261r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1261 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €45,600 (about US$50,534 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Alluring Mint State Ducat with Strong Luster, SWEDEN. Ducat, 1726. Stockholm Mint. Fredrik I. NGC MS-62. Mintmaster: Esaias Zedritz. Mintage: 1,283. An EXTREMELY RARE type that is hardly ever seen in auction, with this particular date likely the rarest. Demonstrating alluring eye appeal and charm, this nearly-Choice Ducat demonstrates a brilliant essence of soft luster that is more reserved than flashy. The strike is nice, with only a touch of weakness on the higher elements of the design. As one of the more uncommon Swedish Ducats, this handsome example certainly does not lack for appeal. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: C. P. Humble Collection (Stockholm - 1852) Lot # 785"

This type was struck 1725-28 with the bust modified slightly in 1727.

Recorded mintage: 1,283.

Specification: 3.48 g, 0.976 fine gold, 22.25 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-58; KM-398; SM-10(10): SG-18; not in Hagander; Bruun-12769.
