Heritage sale 3029, lot 31758

This specimen was lot 31758 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $141. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carl XI Ore 1671, AU58 NGC. Nicely toned with very little wear evident. Scarce grade. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." In the late seventeenth century, the Swedish mints oscillated between striking this denomination in billon (shown here) and copper (KM 234). This type of 1665-85 is common in circulated condition. Eight öre made a mark.
