Stephen Album sale 50, lot 1227

This specimen was lot 1227 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $570. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN: John III, 1568-1592, AR 4 mark, 1570, klippe type, nice even original toning, slightly flawed planchet, XF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." Johan III was the second son of Gustaf Vasa and was Duke of Finland from 1556-1563 when he was imprisoned for opposing his brother, Eric XIV. After the demise of Erik, Johan III became King in 1568 and ruled until his death in 1592. One mark was eight öre. This type was struck 1568-72.
