The first specimen was lot 1226 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN: Erik XIV, 1560-1568, AR 16 öre klippe, 1566, 25x25mm unmounted klippe, crowned arms with flanking date "15-66." // crowned shield inscribed E.R with 2 flanking crosses and ".16-OR." below, even tone, a few small and very old scratches, VF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." The second specimen was lot 11239 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €384 (about US$400). The catalog description[2] noted, "SWEDEN. 16 Öre, 1566 KLIPPE. Stockholm Mint. Erik XIV. NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex. Gotthard Minus Collection (Vienna-1874) Lot # 1738."Johan III was the second son of Gustaf Vasa and was Duke of Finland from 1556-1563 when he was imprisoned for opposing his brother, Eric XIV. After the demise of Erik, Johan III became King in 1568 and ruled until his death in 1592. One mark was eight öre. This type was struck 1563-68 as Erik tried to debase his way out of bankruptcy.
