Suriname 1981-FM 200 gulden
This specimen was lot 1899 in Goldberg sale 112 (Los Angeles, September 2019), where it sold for $169. The catalog description[1] noted, "Surinam. 200 Gulden, 1981. First Anniversary of Revolution. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo." The revolution cited on this coin was a military coup led by Desiré Delano Bouterse (1945-2024) who was de facto dictator of Suriname 1980-87. Despite being convicted of drug smuggling charges in the Netherlands, he was elected president in 2010 and served until 2020. He died in December 2024, a fugitive from justice. This coin was struck, packaged and sold by the Franklin mint and was accompanied by KM 19 (silver 25 gulden).
