Sincona sale 97, lot 1546

This specimen was lot 1546 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,596 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Strassburg/Strasbourg, Stadt (Elsass/Alsace), 1/2 Taler o. J. (um 1610), Strasbourg. Selten. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 122, Osnabrück, März 2007, Los 2844. (France, city of Strasbourg in Alsace, undated half thaler, circa 1610, Strasburg mint. Rare, Extremely Fine, Nicely toned.)"

Strasbourg was an imperial free city until it was seized and annexed by Louis XVI in 1681, ending its independent coinage, altho the mint remained open, producing French coins. The bishop of Strasbourg, who was usually the duke of Lorraine, also struck coins.
