Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 24580

This specimen was lot 24580 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 5 Cents, 1881. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A well struck and softly lustrous coin with a bare hint of toning." The type was struck in 1871-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and this date is scarce. Proofs exist.

Recorded mintage: 180,000 + proofs.

Specification: 1.36 g, 0.800 fine silver, reeded edge.
