Stolberg-Stolberg 1731-IIG 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 33937 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Stolberg. Christof Friedrich & Jost Christian 2/3 Taler (Gulden) 1731-IIG MS63 NGC. A difficult German state whose coinage from all periods is notoriously elusive in Mint State grades and virtually always comes softly struck, this choice representative standing as the sole NGC-graded specimen. Featuring the iconic stag motif against slate-gray centers fringed by margins filled with iridescent color." The SCWC lists numerous 2/3 thalers (KM 151, 165, 183, 197, 212, 211, 251, 275, 277, 296, 308, 330) as well as 24 mariengroschen (different denomination, same weight, see KM 117, 134, 195, 286, 294, 315, 269). None are common but are much more available than the rare thalers such as Dav-2799.
