Sincona sale 77, lot 3066

This specimen was lot 3066 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 5,250 CHF (about US$6,373 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT THOMAS AND PRINCE ISLAND. Demokratische Republik. 100 Dobras 1984, London. FAO - World Fisheries Conference. Sehr selten. Nur 100 Exemplare geprägt. NGC PF68 ULTRA CAMEO. (democratic republic of Saint Thomas and Prince Islands, one hundred dobras of 1984, London mint, World Fisheries Conference. Very rare. Only 100 pieces struck.)"

This type was issued in sets with silver and copper-nickel counterparts. Circulating coinage from this impoverished country, which obtained independence from Portugal in 1975, is very scanty.

Recorded mintage: 50 in gold (KM 41b, shown here), 1,000 in silver (KM 41a) and an unknown but likely large number in copper-nickel (KM 41).
