This issue minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Sao Tomé e Principe, is the last silver ten escudos for that colony. Previous issues were dated 1939 and subsequent copper-nickel issues are dated 1971. The coin is fairly common. The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975. The second specimen was lot 72658 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $95. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAINT THOMAS & PRINCE. 10 Escudos, 1951. NGC MS-66. An ideal example of the type, with full Gem surfaces that are elevated even higher by captivating rainbow-hued tone that adorns both sides. Its unsurpassed grade in the NGC census is yet another feather in this lovely coin's proverbial cap."

Recorded mintage: 40,000.

Specification: 12.5 g, .720 silver, .289 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 14, Gomes-23.01.
