This specimen was lot 1516 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "ST. THOMAS & PRINCE: AR 5 escudos, 1939, NGC graded MS66." In 1939, Portugal struck one, 2½, five and ten escudos for her colony in west Africa. All are scarce in nice condition. This specimen is an essai or pattern. This type was restruck in 1948. Many of the pre-World War Two issues for the Portuguese colonies are hard to find.

Recorded mintage: 60,000.
