The first specimen was lot 35006 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saint Thomas And Prince Island: Portuguese Colony Escudo 1948 MS66 NGC. A fairly scarce issue, resplendent with cartwheel luster, near blemish-free fields, and ample die polish lines. From the Feeling Good Collection." This type was minted in Lisbon in 1948 for the Portuguese colony of Sao Tomé e Principe. Other dates include 1939, 1951, 1961 and 1971. This date is scarce. The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975.
