This specimen was lot 72447 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAINT THOMAS & PRINCE. 50 Centavos, 1948. Lisbon Mint. NGC MS-66. A tantalizing one-year type, this Superb-Gem presents radiant steely gray surfaces with an enticing cartwheel nature to the luster on each side." This type was minted in Lisbon in 1948 for the Portuguese colony of Sao Tomé e Principe. This date is scarce. The colony, originally a slave trading station, later turned to sugar production and finally cacao. The Portuguese withdrew in 1975.
