St. Helena 2003 50 pence KM-31
This specimen was lot 31167 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "St. Helena. British Colony. Elizabeth II gold Proof "Golden Jubilee" 50 Pence 2003 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. This elusive and virtually flawless specimen is the only example seen by either NGC or PCGS, and was struck to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. From the Paramount Collection." St. Helena has less than 5,000 inhabitants, so we surmise that this NCLT was not struck for local use. St. Helena and Ascension islands were merged for administrative purposes in 2003 and their separate coinage ended.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common in copper-nickel, 5,000 in silver and 50 in gold.
Specification: KM 31: 28.28 g, copper-nickel, 38.6 mm diameter; KM 31a: 0.925 fine silver; KM 31b, Fr-8: 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, AGW 1.177 oz.
