St. Gall 1773-H 6 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4956 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$161 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND St. Gallen. Beda Angehrn von Hagenwil, 1767-1796. 6 Kreuzer 1773, Münzstätte des Klosters. Mzz. iH (ligiert) für Stempelschneider Johann Haag auf Monogrammseite. Laubrand. Sehr schön (abbey of St. Gall, Beda Angehrn von Hagenwil, 1767-1796, six kreuzer of 1773. Very fine)." The abbey struck coins until 1783; the city continued coinage after the French occupation until confederation. This one year type, while not common, is probably the most available issue of the abbey in the eighteenth century. The monks also issued a kreuzer (KM 7), 12 kreuzer (KM 17, KM 19), a half ducat (KM 20) and a ducat (KM 21) in 1773. The canton of St. Gall issued almost no coinage between 1739 and 1786.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 2.40 g.
