Sri Lanka 1975 rupee
This specimen was lot 73524 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "SRI LANKA. Rupee, 1975. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Tied with just two others for the finest in the PCGS census, this second year of issue rupee features exceptionally brilliant fields and seemingly flawless surfaces. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." In 1972, Ceylon dropped its membership in the British Commonwealth and changed its name to Sri Lanka, which name is still in use. This type was struck 1972, 1975 and 1978. This example would be worthless were it not from the King's Norton Mint collection of specimens.
