This specimen was lot 73525 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "SRI LANKA. 50 Cents, 1972. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. This stunning Gem, exceeded in the PCGS population report by just two examples, offers exceptionally brilliant surfaces as well as a sublime steel gray appearance. The first year of issue for the type. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." In 1972, Ceylon dropped its membership in the British Commonwealth and changed its name to Sri Lanka, which name is still in use. This type was struck 1972, 1975 and 1978. This example would be worthless were it not from the King's Norton Mint collection of specimens.
