Aureo sale 232, lot 457

The specimen shown was lot 457 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 4,100 euros (about US$6,765 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Estado Español (1936-1975). 1949*1951. 5 pesetas. Muy pocos ejemplares conocidos. Rarísima. EBC+. (Spanish state, 1936-75, five pesetas of 1951, very few examples known, extremely rare, choice extremely fine.)

This Spanish five pesetas was issued by Franco's regime 1949-52. All bear the date 1949 below the dictator's bust but have the actual date in the stars on the reverse. The 1949 is scarce, the 1950 is common and the 1951 and 1952 so rare as to be unpriced in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: 145,000 reported but likely nearly all melted.

Specification: 15 g, nickel, 32 mm diameter.
