Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 743

This specimen was lot 743 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €265 (about US$350 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1891*1891. Alfonso XIII. PGM. 2 pesetas. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. MBC+/MBC. (kingdom of Spain, Alfonso XIII, two pesetas of 1891. Some mint luster, scarce thus, extremely fine or better.)"

The ouster of the monarchy in 1868 failed to bring stability to Spain. A short-lived republic yielded to the rule of Amadeo I, a prince from Italy who, finding nobody willing to listen to his suggestions, abdicated in 1873 and returned to Italy. In 1885, Isabel's son Alfonso died of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son, Alfonso XIII. His "baby head" portrait appears on the two pesetas of 1889-92 but the 1892 is the only readily available date.

Recorded mintage: 93,245.

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, .268 troy oz ASW, this specimen 9,72 g.

Catalog reference: KM 692, Cayón-17629, Cal-31.
