Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 738

This specimen was lot 738 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$290 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1889*1889. Alfonso XIII. MPM. 1 peseta. Leves impurezas. Atractiva. Escasa y más así. EBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Alfonso XIII, 1885-1931, one peseta of 1889, light flaws, attractive and scarce thus, about extremely fine.)"

The ouster of the monarchy in 1868 failed to bring stability to Spain. A short-lived republic yielded to the rule of Amadeo I, a prince from Italy who, finding nobody willing to listen to his suggestions, abdicated in 1873 and returned to Italy. In 1885, Isabel's son Alfonso died of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son, Alfonso XIII. His "baby head" portrait appears on the one peseta of 1889 and 1891 but the 1891 is the only readily available date.

Recorded mintage: 760,149.

Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, this specimen 4,98 g.

Catalog reference: KM 691, Cayón-17608, Cal-37.
