Spain 1879-EM M 10 pesetas (79)
This specimen was lot 30750 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alfonso XII gold 10 Pesetas 1879(79)-EMM AU53 NGC, Madrid mint. An attractive coin for the designation with scant friction evidence over the high points and substantial subdued luster. The handling marks are commensurate with the assigned grade and the strike appears rather strong. A very scarce or rare type, most elusive and desirable in this quality." This type was struck in 1878-79 only with the 1878 being the collectible date. A few restrikes were made 1961-62. The twenty-five pesetas of 1876-80 are far more often seen.
Recorded mintage: 33,000.
Specification: 3.22 g, 0.900 fine gold, reeded edge.
