Aureo sale 261, lot 715

This specimen was lot 715 in Aureo sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €280 (about US$449 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1878*1878. Alfonso XII. EMM. 10 pesetas. Leves rayitas. Escasa y más así. EBC-. (Alfonso XII, 1874-85, ten pesetas of 1878. Light scratches, scarce, about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in 1878-79 only with the 1878 being the collectible date. A few restrikes were made 1961-62. The twenty-five pesetas of 1876-80 are far more often seen. After 1889, Spain struck twenty pesetas on the same module as French twenty francs d'or.

Recorded mintage: 91,000.

Specification: 3.22 g, 0.900 fine gold, reeded edge.
