Aureo y Calicó sale 423, lot 1789

This specimen was lot 1789 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 5,000 € (about US$6,474 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1875. Carlos VII, Pretender. Oñate. 5 pesetas. Minted in silver. Minimal hairlines. Very nice. Ex Aureo y Calicó Selection 2018, no. 423. Extremely rare especially in this condition. S/C- [about uncirculated]." This is classed as a "pretender issue" as Don Carlos, nephew of Fernando VII, never controlled enough of Spain to be recognized as king. It is too rare to have circulated; it is on the border between pattern and fantasy. It is not listed in Unusual World Coins. Wikipedia comments, "Oñati (Spanish: Oñate) is a town located in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, in the north of Spain. It has a population of approximately 10,500 and lies in a valley in the center of the Basque country."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver; this specimen 24,56 g.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, AC. 21, Cayón-17464.
