Spain 1748-S PJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 265 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$34,312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1748. Fernando VI. Sevilla. PJ. 8 escudos. Atractiva. Gran parte de brillo original. Rarísima. Sólo hemos tenido 3 ejemplares. EBC-/EBC. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VI, eight escudos of 1748, Seville mint. Attractive, much luster remaining, extremely rare, we know of only three examples. About extremely fine.)"
In 1748, onzas or doubloons were struck at Lima, Madrid, Mexico, Nuevo Reino and Seville. None are common but the Madrid and Seville issues are extremely rare. Seville would not strike onzas again until 1762.
