Áureo y Calicó sale 391, lot 1342

This specimen was lot 1342 in Aureo y Calicó sale 391 (Barcelona, June 2022), where it sold for €200 (about US$251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1747. Fernando VI. Madrid. J. 1/2 escudo. Buen ejemplar. MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VI, half escudo of 1747, Madrid mint. Nice example, choice very fine.)"

This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1746-59 and is not especially rare. Half escudos were struck in metropolitan Spain 1738-97 in considerable numbers and are quite a bit more common than their silver equals, the eight reales. This is opposite from Latin America, where silver pesos were minted in vast quantities but half escudos would not be minted until the reign of Ferdinand VII.

Recorded mintage: unknown (assayers AJ, J and JB). The 1747-M J is a better date.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.917 gold, this specimen 1,77 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-274; KM-372, AC. 547, Cayón-10653.
