South Africa 1962 2 rand
This specimen was part of lot 5943 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €850 (about US$1,098 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SÜDAFRIKA, Republik seit 1960. 2 Rand 1962, 1966. Insgesamt 14,66 g Feingold. GOLD. 2 Stück., Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (republic of South Africa, since 1960, two rand of 1962 and 1966. Two pieces, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1961-83 along with a gold one rand, minted to the standard of a half sovereign. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967.
Recorded mintage: 10,000 plus 2,344 proofs.
Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW, same standard as a British sovereign.
