South Africa 1962 rand
This specimen was lot 73305 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Rand, 1962. Pretoria Mint. PCGS PROOF-64. A charming small gold issue with flashy surfaces and a detailed strike." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1961-83 along with a gold two rand, minted to the standard of a British sovereign. Sold to collectors and bullion speculators, this type never achieved the popularity of the krugerrand introduced in 1967.
Recorded mintage: 3,955 plus 2,344 proofs.
Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold (same standard as a British half sovereign).
