This specimen was part of lot 25779 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), which sold for $199.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "South African assortment: a nice selection of mostly choice 20th-century coins, uncertified and perfect for the collector who likes to make his own grading decisions." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1961-64 along with a brass cent (KM 57) before its size was reduced. It is common.

Recorded mintage: 11,611,000 plus 4,025 proofs.
