South Africa 1963 cent
This specimen was lot 75671 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $40. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Cent, 1963. Pretoria Mint. PCGS PROOF-68. PCGS population: 6, 1 finer. Practically immaculate surfaces boast an eye-catching brilliance from all angles. Excellent as a representative of the type." In 1960, South Africa withdrew from the British Commonwealth and in 1961 issued all new coins, dropping the bust of the queen for explorer Jan van Riebeeck. This type was issued 1961-64 along with a brass half cent (KM 56) before its size was reduced to 3 g. It is common.
