from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 1009

This specimen was lot 1009 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €350 (about US$443 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"AFRIQUE DU SUD, Georges VI (1936-1952), AV 1 livre, 1952. Très Beau à Superbe. (South Africa, George VI (1936-52), gold pound of 1952. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is a one year type issued in the year of king George VI's death. As none were ever spent, they are today common.

Recorded mintage: 4,508 plus 12,000 proofs.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold.
